On March 2nd, Mr. Shahbaz Bhatti, Pakistani Minister for Minorities, was murdered by radical Islamists

This petrifying figure – based on data collected by the US Center for Study of Global Christianity – was recently disclosed by Massimo Introvigne, the OSCE Representative on Combating Discrimination, at an International Conference sponsored by the Hungarian presidency of the European Union.

EGYPT

  • New Year’s Eve bombing of the coptic al-Qiddissin Church, in Alexandria

  • Egyptian armed forces attack against two Coptic monasteries (St. Bishoy, in Wadi el-Natroun, and St. Makarios in Wady el- Rayan,) using armored vehicles and live ammunition (wounding 19 people) to demolish fences built to protect the monasteries from lawlessness.

  • Mob attacks against the churches of of St. Mina and St. George (in the village of Soul, Atfif, in Helwan district), of Saint Mina, St Abanob and St. Mary (three churches located in Cairo’s Embaba district).

  • Mob attacks against Coptic demonstrators in Mokatam Hills, on the outskirts of Cairo (9 killed and 150 injured, 45 seriously) and at Maspero (1 killed over 100 injured). In the second incident, the Copts were peacefully holding a sit-in in front of the State TV building, demanding that Muslim perpetrators who torched their churches be brought to justice. Further clashes took place over the re-opening of St. Mary and St. Abraham churches in Ain Shams West, Cairo.

  • After those attacks, Military courts paradoxically sentence Christian Copts on charges of possession of firearms and pocket knives and released the arrested Muslims.

  • Disappearance of Coptic girls «converted» to Islam and forcibly married to Muslims. In one Cairo parish alone, at least 21 young girls, many as young as 14, have disappeared! Even though secular law provides for faith reversion, it is very difficult, except for rich families who can afford a full legal defence.
